Provides support to families who are expecting, Aboriginal parents with babies less than 12 months of age, and non-Aboriginal parents with babies of less than 7 months of age. For families living in the Vanderhoof and Saik'uz area.
The Carrier Sekani Family Services Prenatal Nutrition Program provides prenatal and early infant support through home visits, drop-in sessions, craft and cooking circles, and one-to-one support with:
- dieticians, nursing, family workers and peers
- nutrition and prenatal health counselling
- prenatal vitamins
- breastfeeding education
- referrals to other agencies
- traditional activities such as moccasin making, cradleboards, language classes, traditional cooking, and drumming
The goals of the program are to:
- Increase the number of babies born at a healthy birth weight
- Improve the health of the mother and infant through nutrition and supports
- Promote and support breastfeeding
- Allow mothers the opportunity to access necessary resources
- Build a community network
- Provide unbiased information
- Increase the self-esteem of birth mothers
The program features a Mom's Group that runs two days a week (Monday at 10:00 AM and Thursday at 3:30 PM), which takes place at the Neighbourlink building in Vanderhoof or visits in the family's home.
Services are provided to families living in the Vanderhoof and Saik'uz area.
Referrals to the Prenatal Nutrition Program can be made by public health nurses, physicians, community service providers, guardians, and family members or via self-referral.
Eligible participants include First Nations families who are expecting, aboriginal parents with babies less than 12 months of age or non-aboriginal parents with babies of less than 7 months of age. For non-aboriginal families, once the child turns 7 months of age, and for aboriginal families, once the child turns 12 months of age, the families are either discharged from the program or referred to the Infant Development Program or Supported Child Development Program if needed.
