Diabetes Education Program - Thompson Region

Provided by Interior Health

Provides education to increase diabetes awareness and prevention, and help individuals with diabetes manage their condition effectively including insulin adjustment.
Services are available for both adults and children affected by all types of diabetes including Type 1, Type 2, gestational (diabetes in pregnancy) and also pre-diabetes. Support partners, caregivers and family members are also encouraged to attend.

Services are offered in a team approach, which puts you and your family at the centre of your care. Registered Dietitians and Registered Nurses are available at 4 diabetes service locations (RIH, North Shore Health Sciences Centre, or Lansdowne Village (Kamloops Primary Care) to help patients:
  • Learn more about diabetes
  • Manage their insulin
  • Be successful with diabetes-related goals and action plans
  • Manage their vascular risk factors
  • Manage and assist with self management of diabetes technology including pump therapy and CGM.

    Patients are encouraged to see their FP regularly for ongoing diabetes care and management.

    Referral:
  • All referrals are triaged at the RIH Diabetes Education Centre and please indicate on referral if your patient is NOT appropriate for group sessions.
  • For patients with complex forms of diabetes, a General Internist joins the team for the Internal Medicine Diabetes Clinic and Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic, which are available at the Diabetes Centre located at RIH. To refer, please check Request Physician/Team Consult found under the "Medical History" on the Diabetes referral form
  • BARRIERE and CHASE Diabetes Centre provides services for adult patients with Type 2 diabetes including insulin adjustment. No service for patients starting insulin, Type 1, diabetes in pregnancy or gestational diabetes.

    Dr. Trent Smith joins the team for the Pediatric Diabetes Clinic and we aim to see pediatric patients every 3 months until they turn 19 years of age.
